The life and times of Lonesome George

Lonesome George, the last of the Pinta island giant tortoises and a conservation icon, has died of unknown causes. He was believed to be about 100 years old. ‘Bully’ rating reversal: The MPAA and Weinstein Co. agree on compromise that nets documentary PG-13 ›

The filmmakers behind “Bully” — the lauded documentary about the national bullying epidemic — stood up to the system and won.

The Weinstein Co. said Thursday that after cutting a few F-bombs from the piece, they got its R rating reduced to a PG-13.

The Motion Picture Association of America’s ruling means the flick’s target audience can now get in without dragging mom and dad to it. The original R-rating met anyone under 17 couldn’t get in solo.

The one crucial scene on a bus where a 12-year-old is tormented is left in, F-bombs and all. A few curses in other scenes were cut.

Breaking Same-Sex Marriage News of the Day: Maryland today officially became the first East Coast state below the Mason-Dixon line to legalize same-sex marriage.

Governor Martin O’Malley signed the state’s marriage equality bill this afternoon after the Maryland House and Senate passed the legislation on Feb. 17th and 23rd, respectively.

“For a free and diverse people, for people of many faiths, for people committed to the principal of religious freedom,” O’Malley said at the signing ceremony, “the way forward is always found through grater respect for human rights of all, through human dignity for all.”

Same-sex couples won’t be able to get married until January, when the law formally takes effect. Until then, there is still a chance opponents could successfully petition to have the issue placed on November’s ballot. To do so, they would need at least 55,736 valid signature from Maryland voters.

Seven states — CT, IA, MA, NH, NY, VT, WA — and Washington D.C. currently recognize the right of same-sex couples to marry. However, Washington state’s newly signed bill still needs to fend off a the threat of referendum in order to take effect this June.

Gynecologists told to prepare to treat transgender patients ›

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology has come out with a new statement for their members: it’s time to prepare to work with transgender patients.

To address the significant health care disparities of transgender individuals and to improve their access to care, ob-gyns should prepare to provide routine treatment and screening or refer them to other physicians, according to The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (The College). In a Committee Opinion published today, The College also states its opposition to gender identity discrimination and supports both public and private health insurance coverage for gender identity disorder treatment.
